What Is Neurofeedback?

A Therapy Alternative That Works

Neurofeedback — also called EEG biofeedback — is a non-invasive, drug-free brain training technique that teaches your brain to self-regulate. Using sensors placed gently on your scalp, the system reads your brainwave activity in real time and provides instant feedback through audio and visual signals.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which works through insight and conversation, neurofeedback works directly at the neurological level — training the brain to shift out of dysregulated patterns that cause anxiety, poor focus, sleep problems, and emotional reactivity.

Think of it like physical therapy for your brain. The brain learns through repetition and reward — and neurofeedback gives it exactly that, session by session, until the new patterns become automatic.

Most clients notice meaningful changes within 10–20 sessions. And unlike medication, the results don't stop when you stop training — they last.

When Therapy Helps You Understand It
Neurofeedback Helps You Move Past It

Many of our clients have spent years in talk therapy — and made real progress. But they still felt stuck.

Traditional Talk Therapy
  • 💬 Works through conversation and insight
  • 🧠 Helps you understand your patterns
  • 📅 Ongoing — results depend on continued sessions
  • 😔 Can feel like you know what to do, but can't do it
  • 💊 Often combined with medication for nervous system symptoms
vs
Neurofeedback at IWCNV
  • Works directly at the neurological level
  • 🔄 Trains the brain to self-regulate automatically
  • Results are lasting — even after sessions end
  • 🎯 Helps when you know what to do, but your brain won't cooperate
  • 🚫 Completely drug-free and non-invasive

Neurofeedback is not a replacement for therapy — it's a powerful complement. Many of our clients do both.

What to Expect

What Happens During a Neurofeedback Session?

1

Initial Assessment (Session 1)

Your practitioner asks ~90 questions to build a fully individualized brain training protocol tailored to your specific symptoms, history, and goals. No two protocols are the same.

2

Sensor Placement — Painless & Non-Invasive

Small sensors are placed on your ears and scalp. Nothing goes into your brain — the sensors only read the electrical activity already coming from your brainwaves. No shocks, no discomfort.

3

Brain Training Begins

You relax and either listen to audio (eyes closed) or watch calming visual fractals on a screen (eyes open). The software detects when your brain enters optimal states and rewards it with positive feedback — teaching it to return there on its own.

4

Progress Tracking Every Session

At the start of each follow-up session, you answer ~6 questions so your protocol is continuously fine-tuned. Most clients notice meaningful shifts within the first 10 sessions.

5

Lasting Results — Even After You Stop

Unlike medication, the changes neurofeedback creates are neurological — your brain has literally learned new patterns. Most clients maintain their gains long after completing their program.

Common Questions

Neurofeedback FAQ

Neurofeedback is not a replacement for therapy — it's a powerful complement to it. Many of our clients continue working with a therapist while doing neurofeedback. The difference is that neurofeedback works at the neurological level, helping your nervous system actually implement the insights you gain in therapy. Think of it as removing the biological barriers that have been keeping you stuck.
Absolutely nothing goes into your brain. The sensors only read the electrical activity already coming from your brainwaves — like a microphone picking up sound. The process is completely passive, non-invasive, and drug-free. Neurofeedback has been researched and practiced for over 50 years with an excellent safety profile.
Most clients complete between 20–40 sessions for lasting results, though many notice meaningful changes within the first 10. The exact number depends on your goals, history, and how your brain responds. We offer both a "slow and steady" approach (1–2 sessions/week) and an intensive "sprint" approach for faster results.
Your brain is constantly processing feedback from its environment — just like it processes gravity without you consciously thinking about it. Neurofeedback software gives the brain real-time positive reinforcement when it produces healthier brainwave patterns, similar to how you'd reward a puppy for sitting on command. Over time, the brain learns to produce those patterns automatically.
Currently, most insurance plans do not cover neurofeedback. We are a private-pay practice. However, many clients find that the lasting results of neurofeedback make it a cost-effective investment compared to ongoing medication or long-term therapy. We're happy to discuss options during your free consultation.
Yes. Neurofeedback has been studied for over 50 years and has a growing body of peer-reviewed research supporting its effectiveness for ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders, and more. It is listed as a Level 1 (Best Support) intervention for ADHD by the American Pediatric Association. We're happy to share research during your consultation.
